Men's Basketball Wins On the Road in Overtime
The Oxford College of Emory University men's basketball team defeated the Stormy Petrels of Oglethorpe University Reserve Squad in overtime on Monday night, 84-79. The Eagles improve to 6-3 for the season.
Down 69-66 with 7.6 seconds left, the Eagles inbounded the ball, looking for a shot to tie the game. The ball was worked around the arc when it found sophomore Justin Whitening who took one dribble and stepped back, then proceeded to hit the tying shot as the buzzer sounded.
In overtime, the Eagles would gain a six-point lead after three straight trips to the charity stripe. After a Stormy Petrel basket, sophomore KJ Walker would find classmate Isaac Snyder who would score and get fouled, sending him to the free-throw line. The Eagles would convert on a total of 13-of-15 free throws in overtime to help them secure the victory.
Oxford was led by five players in double figures, with Snyder scoring a game-high 24 points and 15 rebounds. Sophomore Sean Osei scored 18 points with 9 assists, while Walker had 15 points. Whitening ended up with 12 points and sophomore Nick Hardin contributed 11.
The Eagles will return to action after Thanksgiving when they hit the road to play Deep South in Villa Rica, GA. Tipoff will be at 8:00 PM.
