The Emory Oxford men's basketball team hosted the 11th Annual Dennis Spruell Classic on Friday and Saturday. The two-day tournament featured Emory Oxford, Frankling Prep Academy, Carolina Basketball Academy and New Rock Prep Academy. The Eagles made it to the championship game before falling to Carolina Basketball Academy, 85-69.
Day 1:
On the first day of action, the Eagles got a hard-fought win in the opening game, defeating Franklin Prep by a score of 77-70.
Sophomore guard Sean Osei led the Eagles, hitting four three-pointers and pouring in 19 points for the second straight game. Osei added four assists and three steals to his stat line. Fellow sophomore Justin Whitening also shot the ball well, scoring 16 points and grabbing six rebounds. Sophomore forward Isaac Snyder finished with 9 points, 11 rebounds, and a career-high six assists, narrowly missing a fifth straight double-double. Sophomore guard KJ Walker added 8 points and five assists.
Oxford also got a huge boost off the bench from two of its freshmen, as Zuri Greene and Andrew Anton both notched career-high scoring totals. Greene contributed 13 points and five rebounds in 23 minutes of action, while Anton scored 9 points on 4-4 from the field.
In the second game of the day, Carolina Basketball Academy would make their way into the championship game after defeating New Rock Prep.
Day 2:
In the third-place game, New Rock would easily defeat Franklin Prep.
In the championship game, the Eagles would fall behind early against Carolina Basketball and were down 40-23 at the half. Despite solid efforts in the second half, Oxford could not overcome this deficit.
Osei led the Eagles with 20 points, including five three-pointers and three rebounds. Snyder secured his tenth double-double with 11 points and a team-high 12 rebounds. Walker also finished with 11 points, eight rebounds and a team-high eight assists. Sophomore Nick Hardin also scored 11 points, including three three-pointers.
The Eagles, now 8-6 for the season, will turn to Monday, January 16th, when they host in-town rival Oglethorpe University Reserve Squad. This game will tip off at 4:00 pm.
