Women's tennis competes at nationals
Sumter, S.C. - The Emory Oxford competed at the NJCAA Division II Women's National Championships for the first time. The event was held at the Palmetto Tennis Center in Sumter, South Carolina.
First-year Rachel Blais found the most success at nationals. She made it all the way until the semifinals in flight 1 singles before falling to the No. 1 seed by a score of 6-3, 6-2.
Blais easily won her first match by a score of 6-1, 6-0. Then she faced the fifth seed in the quarterfinals, winning 6-0, 6-7, 6-1. Blais also teamed up with fellow first-year Zari Haque in first doubles. The duo lost in the first round.
Sophomore Samantha Goldberg competed in flight 5 singles, and won the first round 6-2, 2-6, 6-0, before falling in the quarterfinals by a close score of 7-6, 6-4. She teamed up with first-year Arielle Gomberg in flight 3 doubles. The duo won the first round 6-0, 6-0, before falling in the quarterfinals to the No. 1 seed.
Gomberg made it to the consolation semifinals in flight 4 singles before being defeated. She won the first round 8-1.
First-year Sophie Fung dominated the flight 6 consolation rounds, winning the final match. She won the round of 16 by a score of 8-0, won the quarterfinal 8-2, and secured the final win 8-0.
